Every step lighten the loads of Stress: A walk that Unites Makeni for Mental Health Awareness

In a powerful show of solidarity, reflection, and resilience, the city of Makeni units on Saturday, 4th October 2025, as Visit Makeni, in partnership with SUCCEED Sierra Leone, hosted a Mental Health Mindful Walk to commemorate World Mental Health Day 2025. This year’s global theme, “Access to Serve: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” set the tone for a moving and meaningful event that resonated deeply with participants from all walks of life

From early morning, the streets of Makeni echoed with purpose as mental health advocates, healthcare professionals, community leaders, students, civil society members, and everyday citizens walked side by side — not only to raise awareness but to affirm a collective commitment: mental health matters.

The walk was more than just a symbolic stride — it was a platform for connection, conversation, and change. Participants seized the opportunity to network, share personal stories, and build new partnerships across sectors. The energy was electric, yet grounded in empathy and hope, as meaningful conversations sparked along the way, reminding everyone that healing begins when we walk together.

Representatives from SUCCEED Sierra Leone shared short reflections, emphasizing the importance of ensuring accessible mental health support, particularly for communities affected by disasters, conflict, and displacement. The theme struck a chord in a country that knows too well the long-term effects of crises — and the importance of sustained support systems.

As the walk concluded, the atmosphere was filled with joy, unity, and a renewed sense of purpose. Smiles, selfies, and shared hugs painted a picture of a community that is ready to prioritize mental wellness — not just for a day, but every day.

“Today, we didn’t just walk — we connected, we listened, and we stood up for something bigger than ourselves,” said one participant. “Next year can’t come soon enough.”

Mark your calendars and lace up your shoes — because next year, we’re not just walking. We’re creating a movement.
